In July, we completed our first large installation outside of Pasadena at the PVUSA test facility in northern California. We will be using the data from these units to refine the Sunflower.

This Spring we began rigorous testing of prototype production units of Sunflower systems built to manufacturing specifications. Shown here on our roof are six units "on sun." They are propped up on cement blocks for easy underside access with wires going to test nearby equipment.

The first working prototype of our dual-axis tracking solar concentrator was mounted on our roof in Pasadena, California, in January 2004. Larger than the product that will ultimately ship, this 10' by 10' unit provides a rich test bed for each of the component parts individually as well as when integrated into a working system.

One of the many elements in our market analysis is the concentration of solar power in particular parts of the country. While our own anecdotal evidence pointed us in the direction of the southwestern U.S., this map really drove home the point.

This EI-patented concentrator design uses a number of specially shaped multi-surface reflectors to get more than 100-to-1 concentration over 2.5 hours of a day, with no moving parts. This design turned out to be ideal for generating power during peak periods but was surpassed for all-day usage by subsequent designs.

This first rotary design improved heat transfer through extended surface area and improved sealing by using an externally applied magnetic drive of the rotating displacer.
