William McDonough

is a world-renowned architect and designer and winner of three U.S. presidential awards: the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development (1996), the National Design Award (2004); and the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award (2003). Time magazine recognized him as a "Hero for the Planet" in 1999, stating that "his utopianism is grounded in a unified philosophy that - in demonstrable and practical ways - is changing the design of the world." Bill is founder and principal of two design firms, William McDonough + Partners, Architecture and Community Design, and McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. His most recent book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, co-authored with German chemist Michael Braungart, is a manifesto calling for the transformation of human industry through ecologically intelligent design. In addition to his design practices, he is professor of both business and architecture at the University of Virginia and consulting professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University.

Charles Gay

is the former director of the USDOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory and a world-renowned expert on solar cell manufacturing. Charlie Gay is the co-founder of Greenstar, a company that delivers solar power to villages in the developing world. His expertise includes solar cell manufacturing and international business. He began his industrial career in 1975 designing solar power system components for communications satellites at Spectrolab, Inc. a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft Co. He joined ARCO Solar in 1978 where he established the research and development program, and was project leader for the commercialization of single crystal silicon wafer technology from laboratory to mass production. He served in various leadership positions ranging from Director of Research to President of the company. In 1990 he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Siemens Solar Industries where he was responsible for increasing company sales into 110 countries and expanding the development of thin film solar technology to three continents. In 1998, Dr. Gay served as President and Chief Executive Officer of ASE Americas, the third largest solar cell manufacturer in the United States. He was responsible for commercializing silicon ribbon as a starting material in the manufacture of photovoltaic solar panels. The success of this has led to establishing the world's largest factory for solar cell production at 60 megawatts in size.

Bob Epstein, Ph.D.

is an entrepreneur and engineer and a leading advocate for the economic side of good environmental policy, focused on taking a reasoned, economically sound approach to environmental issues. In June of 2000, he co-founded Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2). E2 is a national community of professionals and business people who believe in protecting the environment while building economic prosperity. Through active support of Natural Resources Defense Council, E2 works to influence state and national environmental policy. He is a co-founder of four information technology companies: Sybase, GetActive Software, Zight, and Britton-Lee. Bob currently splits his professional time between his roles as co-founder of E2, Chairman of the Board at GetActive Software, private investor; board member of the Merola Opera Program, and Trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Bob's community activities are focused on the environment, public education and opera.

Paul Maycock

is the president of Photovoltaic Energy Systems, the leading PV market research firm. Paul edits the monthly newsletter, "PV News," which goes to readers in 58 countries. His annual estimates and projections of PV sales, based on confidential interviews of every key player in the industry, are used worldwide for planning and analysis purposes. Before starting PV Energy in 1981, Paul was director of the PV Energy Systems division of the US Department of Energy. He also spent 11 years at Texas Instruments in a variety of strategic planning positions. He concurrently serves as the chairman of the board of the Solar Electric Light Fund, a non-profit organization that has installed over 5,000 PV systems in the developing world.

Steve Westly

is a serial entrepreneur, having held executive positions at a variety of high-tech companies including Netcom, WhoWhere?, and eBay, where he was one of their founding executives. He retired from eBay in 2000 when he and his wife, Anita Yu, established the Steve and Anita Westly Foundation. Prior to eBay, he also served on the faculty at Stanford Business School. Steve has served in government at the local, state and federal level, having spent time in San Jose's Office of Economic Development and at the Department of Energy in Washington, DC., and was State Controller of California from 2003 to 2007.

David Goodstein, Ph.D.

is Vice Provost and Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Caltech, where he has been on the faculty for more than 35 years. In 1995, he was named the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor. In 1999, Dr. Goodstein was awarded the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers, and in 2000, the John P. McGovern Medal of the Sigma Xi Society. He has served on and chaired numerous scientific and academic panels, including the National Advisory Committee to the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation. In the 1980's he was Director and host of The Mechanical Universe, an educational television series that has been used by millions of students all over the world. His forthcoming book, Out of Gas: The End of the Age of Oil, details the current patterns of extraction and use of fossil fuels and provides a glimpse at a post-oil future.

Harry Atwater, Ph.D.

is Howard Hughes Professor and Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology. He is a nationally recognized expert in the emerging field of nanostructures and the growth, characterization and modeling of thin films.

Roger Ballentine

is the Founder and President of Green Strategies Inc., where he advises and represents businesses, associations, government agencies and non-profit entities on domestic and international public policy issues and business strategies, focusing on energy and environmental matters. Roger previously was a senior member of the White House staff, serving President Bill Clinton as Chairman of the White House Climate Change Task Force, Deputy Assistant to the President for Environmental Initiatives, and Special Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs, where he focused on energy and environment issues. Prior to serving in the White House, Roger was a partner at the Washington law firm of Patton, Boggs L.L.P., and also was Adjunct Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and the Harvard Law School, and serves on the Boards of the American Council for Renewable Energy and the Solar Electric Light Fund.

Ron Pernick

, co-founder and principal of Clean Edge, is an accomplished market research, publishing, and business development entrepreneur with two decades of high-tech experience. At Clean Edge he has co-authored more than a dozen reports on emerging clean technologies and has worked with a range of clients including multinationals, start-ups, government agencies, and investors. In addition to conducting market research and providing consulting services, he oversees many of Clean Edge's strategic initiatives including the co-production of the annual Clean-Tech Investor Summit and the creation and management of the NASDAQ® Clean Edge® U.S. Index. Prior to founding Clean Edge, he ran his own environmental web consulting practice and earlier helped build the brands of such Internet pioneers as Internet In A Box, Preview Travel, The WELL, and Yahoo! During his career, he has worked in the U.S. and Japan, serving both emerging and established companies. He has been an instructor and adjunct faculty at UC Berkeley Extension, New College's Green MBA program, and now Portland State University.

Joel Makower

has been a well-respected voice on business, the environment, and the bottom line for more than 20 years. As a writer, speaker, and strategist on corporate environmental practices, clean technology, and green marketing, he has helped a wide range of companies align environmental responsibility with business success. He is co-founder and executive editor of Greener World Media, Inc., which produces GreenBiz.com and its sister sites, ClimateBiz.com and GreenerBuildings.com. Joel also is a co-founder and principal of Clean Edge Inc., a research and publishing firm focusing on building markets for clean energy technologies, and serves as a senior consultant to GreenOrder, a sustainability strategy firm that works with such companies as Dupont, General Electric, and General Motors. From 1991 to 2005, Joel was editor and publisher of The Green Business Letter, an award-winning monthly newsletter he founded on corporate environmental strategy.
